5 Warning Signs Of Gum Disease You Shouldn’t Ignore

Alex Benigno • November 13, 2024

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious condition that can lead to tooth loss and other health issues if left untreated. Often subtle in its early stages, gum disease may progress silently, making it essential to recognise the warning signs before it worsens. Here’s a look at the signs to watch out for and when it may be time to seek
professional dental care

1. Persistent Bad Breath

While occasional bad breath is common, persistent foul odour may indicate an underlying issue. Chronic bad breath often arises from bacteria buildup in the gums, particularly in individuals with gum disease. As the disease progresses, odours can become more noticeable due to the bacteria thriving in deep gum pockets and decaying food particles trapped along the gum line.

Common causes can include:

  • Bacteria buildup in gum pockets
  • Food particles decaying in hard-to-clean areas
  • Infection from gum disease

2. Swollen Or Bleeding Gums

Swelling and bleeding are often the first signs of gingivitis, the initial stage of gum disease. Healthy gums generally don’t bleed during brushing or flossing, but irritated gums may bleed due to plaque buildup that irritates the gum tissue. Left untreated, these symptoms can worsen, damaging the tissue supporting the teeth.

Signs of swelling and bleeding may include:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Bleeding during brushing or flossing
  • Discomfort or soreness around the gum line

3. Gum Recession

Gum recession is characterised by gums that appear to shrink back from the teeth, which can expose the tooth or even its root. This receding gum line may be a sign of advancing gum disease and can result in sensitivity or pain. As gum pockets deepen, bacteria can accumulate, furthering damage to the gums and potentially leading to tooth loss if untreated.

Indicators of gum recession can include:

  • Exposed tooth roots
  • Longer-looking teeth
  • Increased sensitivity, especially near the gum line

4. Sensitive Teeth

Tooth sensitivity may indicate gum disease, especially when eating hot or cold foods and drinks. When gums recede, the sensitive parts of the teeth may become exposed, making them susceptible to changes in temperature or pressure. Persistent sensitivity in areas where gums have receded can indicate infection or gum tissue damage.

Signs of sensitivity related to gum issues:

  • Sharp pain when eating hot or cold foods
  • Discomfort around the gum line
  • Increased sensitivity to acidic foods or beverages

5. Loose Or Shifting Teeth

Loose or shifting teeth can indicate that gum disease has progressed, weakening the structural support around the teeth. This issue often appears in advanced stages of periodontal disease, where the supporting bone and tissues are impacted.

Indicators of shifting or loosening teeth can include:

  • New gaps appearing between teeth
  • Movement in individual teeth when pressure is applied
  • Changes in your bite or how teeth fit together
